What is Capacitive touch?

Touch-sensitive buttons are popular in everyday human-machine interface applications because of its ease of use, aesthetics, and non-mechanical motion. In particular, Capacitive touch sensing technology can be implemented with copper pads in standard PCB designs, so it’s much popular comparing to other Technology.

Principle of Capacitive touch

When any object with capacitive properties, such as a finger, contacts a capacitive touch sensor, it will act as another capacitor due to its dielectric properties. This will change the effective capacitance of the system to detect touch motion.

As shown in below picture, the finger acts as one of the parallel plates and the other parallel plate is connected to the sensor input of the chip. The iron in the human blood will produce a set of capacitors that attach to the body surface. When this capacitor bank is close to the conductor, a capacitor that is substantially coupled to ground will be generated, which will be reflected as a change in the measured voltage when the touch is determined.

Recent advances in touch sensing technology have reduced the cost associated with this popular user interface, making it an ideal choice for consumer electronics, industrial products and other products. The main advantage of a capacitive touch sensor compared to a conventional mechanical switch is that it does not wear out over time like a mechanical switch. By using the on-chip CTMU peripheral or CVD technology of the microcontroller, designers can implement a capacitive touch-sensing user interface with minimal components and at a lower cost.
